Aldemar Ibrahimović – Urban Poetics
The artistic and thematic thread running through Aldemar Ibrahimović’s body of work is the human figure and the space to which it belongs—the realm through which it moves and in which it lives. Nature and landscape, together with architecture, are the essential determinants of individual existence, and sites for intervention within the artist’s real and imaginary, physical and space-specific, and mental and cultural landscape.
The microcosm of his native world and the poeticised landscapes of memory preoccupy the artist, keeping him in a state of creative readiness for self-expression. Through constant departures and returns, Aldemar subtly guides us through his own points of anchorage and origin—the reversible “points” of departure within the coded system of art.
The architecture of Aldemar’s painting allows for no abrupt superimpositions, but rather for continuities with what came before, with what has been lived and inwardly experienced, and which, in turn, points toward what is anticipated, the present, and yet to come. Without ever physically leaving the Rožaje house, the artist constructs the “skyscrapers” of an urban milieu, utopian atmospheres, and dreamscapes. The leap into the global leads toward a world of the dehumanised man, who wishes to hold on to his once-familiar, now forgotten self. Planes of façades overlap and open onto new experiences, while the disoriented contemporary individual wanders frantically through the empty, undefined streets of self-determination.
The compositional skeleton of the painting remains unchanged; the multilayered, collagelike ensembles alter the supporting elements in formal rather than essential terms. Even within the urban milieu, Aldemar’s human figure is a shadow, a faceless mask or silhouette, poised for flight, with arms flung toward the unknown. Man—Nobody becomes Everyone in a fragmented and disintegrating dystopian world, in which Aldemar, nonetheless, finds doors and windows opening onto new worldviews, challenges, and possibilities at the crossroads of feeling and memory.
In elaborating grand, universal themes, the artist moves from the individual and personal toward the general, creating painterly cycles that build upon one another and convey the same message, woven from balanced and diverse narrative motifs. The lights of the metropolis introduce a new atmosphere and a new luminosity into a palette of finely nuanced tonal values. Subtly modulated tones of blue, green, and yellow, with accents of red, form levitating facades, scattered windows, doors, and fragments of architecture in a specific energetic movement whose cohesive subject is the disoriented individual present throughout all of Aldemar’s artistic cycles.
Both architecture and the human figure require an essential centre: an immanent nature that need not be, and is not necessarily, present in the visible, real environment.
“Urban Poetics” changes its milieu and its architecture, but not its inner nature. As long as this remains so, there is hope and the possibility that we may situate ourselves within a steadfast, powerfully constituted being that will not abandon the human being, or the essential human within him. Aldemar Ibrahimović’s painting, more than poetic realism, lyrical intimism, the figurative, or the abstract, speaks in a distinctive language of essence…
